My Review

Nicole Trope delivers a dark and addictive psychological thriller that explores the power of manipulation, the fragility of memory, and the lengths some people will go to for revenge. And money.

What fascinated me the most about this novel was the relationship between Juliet and Lacy. At first, their relationship seems genuine, but as the story unfolds, readers slowly realize that Lacy's motives ar far more sinister than they seem. Watching Lacy systematically manipulate Juliet's thoughts and emotions created a constant feeling of tension and unease.

Juliet is a sympathetic protagonist whose vulnerability made her an easy target. After losing the future she had worked so hard to build, she is desperately searching for meaning and connection. Trope does an excellent job portraying how grief, depression, and trauma can make someone susceptible to manipulation.

Lacy, however, was one of the most unsettling villains because she didn't rely on physical violence alone-she systematically manipulated Juliet's mind, making readers question what was real alongside the protagonist. That aspect makes the novel especially creepy and memorable. She is also the most fascinating character in the story. While her actions are horrifying, her motivations are rooted in years of resentment and abandonment. She isn't a simple villain; she's a deeply damaged person whose obsession with revenge consumes her entire life.

One of the most disturbing aspects of the story is how Lacy convinces Juliet that memories from Lacy's own childhood belong to Juliet. This psychological manipulation adds an unsettling layer to the novel and raises questions about trust, perception, and identity.

The reveal involving Nathan-known to Juliet as Adam-was another standout moment. His role in Lacy's schemes adds another layer of betrayal and suspense, making it difficult to know who Juliet can trust.
