Wayward Girls Review: A Five Star Historical Fiction Novel About Courage and Resilience

My five star review of Wayward Girls, a powerful historical fiction novel filled with unforgettable women, emotional storytelling, courage, and themes that reminded me of The Women by Kristin Hannah.

Some books entertain you, some books educate you, and some stay with you long after you've turned the final page. Wayward Girls is one of those rare novels that does all three. Rich with historical detail, emotional depth, and unforgettable characters, this novel captured my attention from the very first chapter and never let go.

Synopsis

Wayward Girls tells the story of young women whose lives intersect during a time when society often judged and controlled women who did not fit expected roles. Through heartbreak, resilience, friendship, and courage, this novel explores themes of identity, survival, and the power of women supporting one another through the most harrowing of circumstances.

Without giving away spoilers, readers can expect a deeply emotional journey that shines a light on a lesser known aspect of women's history while keeping the story highly engaging and character-driven.

What I Loved

One of the greatest aspects of this novel is its characters. The women feel authentic, flawed, and incredibly human. Their struggles are incredibly heartbreaking at times, but their determination and growth make their journeys rewarding to follow.

This novel also shines a light on the unbecoming and dark secrets of the Catholic Church. Their darkness does not just include what the priests were/are doing. I will just say that.

The historical setting (Vietnam War era) is also compelling. The author brings this era to life through vivid details and thoughtful storytelling, creating an immersive reading experience that feels both educational and emotional.

I also liked how the novel balances difficult subject matter with moments of hope, friendship, and resilience. Even during its darkest moments, the story never loses sight of the strength f its characters.

Wayward Girls and The Women

As I read, I found myself thinking of The Women by Kristin Hannah. While the stories are different, the era and the themes are very similar. Both novels focus on women's experiences during challenging periods of history and showcase extraordinary courage in the face of adversity. I would also posit that The Women was physically graphic while Wayward Girls was mentally or psychologically graphic.

My Thoughts

Obviously, my favorite character was Mairin. She reminded me a whole lot of me. Rebellious, didn't give a fuck, strong-headed, and determined. The amount of times she tried to escape would have been me. The determination to escape, even when she failed, would have been me. One thing society is not going to do is put me in a box and expect me to act as they want me to. Fuck that.

While some of the storylines were a bit predictable, I did like the emotions that they provoked at the end. Without giving too much away, I think my favorite storyline was Angela's for a multitude of reasons. It was dark it was harrowing, but it was satisfying.

What surprised me the most was Janice's storyline. Because, girl what? But hey, sometimes the most familiar thing is what motivates us and keeps us going.

My Rating

Wayward Girls is a moving, beautifully written historical novel that combines compelling storytelling with powerful themes of resilience, friendship, and hope. Its memorable characters and emotional impact make it an easy five star read for me.

If you enjoy historical fiction that centers women's voices and explores overlooked stories from the past, I highly recommend Wayward Girls to your reading list.
