A Gothic Mystery Hidden Inside an Apartment Building
Lisa Unger's The New Couple in 5B is a suspenseful thriller that blends mystery, psychological tension, and gothic atmosphere into a story that kept me guessing until the very end. What begins as an unexpected inheritance quickly spirals into a web of secrets, betrayals, and shocking revelations that make it nearly impossible to put down.
The story follows Rosie and Chad Lowan, a struggling married couple who inherit a luxury apartment in the mysterious Windermere building in New York City. What seems like a dream opportunity soon turns into something far darker as the couple uncovers the building's disturbing history and becomes entangled with its eccentric residents.
The Windermere as a Gothic Character
One aspect of the novel that stood out to me was the Windermere building itself. Rather than serving as a simple backdrop, the building feels like a character itself, as you often see in novels with gothic themes.
I interpreted the Windermere as having a supernatural presence. The building's dark history, unsettling atmosphere, and influence over the people who live there created strong gothic vibes throughout the novel. The setting reminded me of the infamous Cecil Hotel in Los Angeles-a place surrounded by mystery, tragedy, and urban legends.
Only Murders in the Building Meets Gothic Horror
As I was reading, I couldn't help but thinking of the television show Only Murders in the Building. Both stories feature mysterious apartment buildings filled with secrets, suspicious residents, hidden motives, and deaths that need to be unraveled.
However, while Only Murders in the Building leans heavily into humor, The New Couple in 5B embraces a much darker and more gothic tone. The result is a story that feels like a blend of modern thriller, haunted-house mystery, and psychological suspense.
Who Would Enjoy The New Couple in 5B
Readers who enjoy:
-Atmospheric thrillers with strong gothic elements
-Stories where the setting feels like a character itself
-Apartment building mysteries filled with eccentric neighbors and hidden secrets
-Psychological suspense that keeps you questioning what is real
-Books with shocking twists and multiple layers of deception
-Fans of the TV show Only Murders in the Building who would enjoy a much darker, more suspenseful take on a mystery set in an apartment building
-Readers fascinated by mysterious real-life locations such as the Cecil Hotel and the legends that surround them

Shocking Twists and Reveals
One of the things I enjoyed most about this novel was the number of shocking twists throughout the story. Several moments genuinely surprised me, including:
-Dana's alleged suicide
-Xavier's suicide
-The revelation that Abi was Willa's baby daddy
-The affair between Max and Olivia
-Chad's suicide
Each revelation added another layer to the mystery and kept me questioning what was really happening within the walls of the Windermere.
Why This Book Was Especially Appealing to Me
One thing that immediately drew me into the story was its New York City setting. I have always loved books, movies, and TV shows set in New York City not only for its magical atmosphere but also because the city itself often feels like another character in the story. The combination of the city's history, architecture, and endless possibilities creates the perfect backdrop for mysteries and thrillers.
In The New Couple in 5B, the Winderemere building stands at the center of everything, and its location in New York City only adds to its gothic atmosphere. The city's energy, hidden histories, and larger than life reputation made the story feel even more immersive. As someone who loves books set in New York City, this setting was one of my favorite aspects of the novel.
I would also like to point out that the Windermere building in The New Couple in 5B felt like combo between the Arconia building in Only Murders in the Building and the Cecil Hotel-beautiful on the surface but hiding a dark and disturbing history beneath it all.
Final Thoughts and My Rating
The New Couple in 5B is a compelling thriller filled with twists, secrets, and an unforgettable setting. Readers who enjoy atmospheric mysteries, unreliable characters, and gothic elements will likely find a lot to love here.
The Winderemere's eerie presence, the shocking revelations, and the lingering questions of whether supernatural forces were truly at work made this a memorable reading experience for me, one of the best books I have read in 2026.
