If you're looking for a psychological thriller packed with secrets, suspense, and jaw-dropping twists (as all Freida books are), The Divorce delivers exactly what readers have come to expect from Freida McFadden. Fast-paced, addictive, and impossible to put down, this novel had me questioning everything until the very end.
As with many of McFadden's books, the story pulls readers in immediately and refuses to let go. Every chapter seems to reveal a new secret, making it difficult to stop reading "just one more chapter." I always read her books in one sitting.
Synopsis
The Divorce follows a marriage that is far more complicated than it appears on the surface. As hidden truths begin to emerge, the lines between victim and villain become increasingly blurred. The story explores deception, trust, betrayal, and the secrets people keep from those closest to them.
Readers should prepare for plenty of surprises and a plot that constantly shifts beneath their feet.
What I Loved
One of my favorite things about this novel, as with all Freida books, was the pacing. The story moves quickly, with short chapters and constant revelations that keep the suspense high from beginning to nd.
I also loved the way Freida plays with reader expectations. Just when I thought i had everything figured out, another twist completely changed my perspective, especially when they changed narrators. The uncertainty kept me engaged throughout the entire book.
The characters are layered and unpredictable, which made it difficult to know who to trust. That sense of uncertainty added to the tension and made the reading experience even more enjoyable.
My Thoughts
Did I guess the ending? Yes and no. I thought I had it until the book switched narrators. I can't say what my favorite twist is without giving away the ending, but just know it is a juicy one. One that you do not expect. But isn't that what Freida does best?
My favorite character is the true mother. Quite which mother I am talking about, you will just have to read and find out. She never gives up on her child and will literally do anything for him. Anything. She is also the character I trusted the least. Why? Well, you'll just have to read it and find out. I also love the redemption arc found within the story. I love a good redemption story as much as I love Redemption Song by Bob Marley.
Comparatively, this was right on par with all other Freida books. The story does not go as you expect. The ending is not what you expect. You think you know what will happen the whole time until the ending actually comes and you're like what the fuck? The Housemaid am I right? But all of this is why I love Freida books and can read them in one sitting. They are very hard to put down, even if you think you know what is going to happen. Because what you think is going to happen, never happens.
Why I Gave it Five Stars
For me, a five star thriller is one that keeps me invested from beginning to end, surprises me multiple times, and leaves me thinking about the story after I've finished it. The Divorce checks all of these boxes.
The combination of suspense, strong pacing, memorable twists, and engaging characters made this an incredibly satisfying read. It's exactly the kind of thriller that reminds me why I enjoy Freida's books so much.
Final Verdict
The Divorce is another addictive thriller from Freida McFadden that delivers exactly what fans love: shocking twists, unreliable characters, and nonstop suspense. It's a fast, entertaining read that keeps readers guessing until the final pages.
If you enjoy psychological thrillers filled with secrets, betrayals, and unexpected revelations, this books deserves a spot on your reading list.
I would recommend this book for:
-Fans of Freida McFadden
-Readers who love psychological thrillers
-Anyone who enjoys unreliable narrators
-Readers looking for a fast-paced page-turner-Fans of twist-heavy suspense novels
