The Couple Next Door by Shari Lapena-Book Review
The Book That Made Me Fall in Love with Shari Lapena
If there's one author I can always count on me for an addictive, page-turning thriller, it's Shari Lapena. The Couple Next Door was the novel that introduced me to her writing, and from the very first chapter, I understood why so many readers rave about her book. It remains one of my all-time favorite domestic thrillers.
The premise is brilliantly simple. Anne and Marco Conti leave their baby sleeping at home while attending a dinner party next door. They check on her regularly throughout the evening, believing everything is perfectly safe. But when they return home, the unimaginable has happened-their baby is GONE.
From that moment forward, the story never lets up.
One of the things I loved most about this novel is the relentless pacing. Every time I thought I had figured out what was happening, Lapena pulled the rug out from under me with another revelation. The twists don't feel forced-they build naturally from the characters' lies, secrets, and hidden motivations.
What makes The Couple Next Door especially compelling is that nearly every character has something to hide. Nobody feels completely innocent, and everyone becomes a suspect at one point or another. As a reader, you're constantly changing your theories, questioning every conversation, and second-guessing every clue. Those are my favorite kind of thrillers.
Lapena also excels at creating believable family drama. The story isn't just about missing a child-it's about marriage, trust, guilt, greed, and the devastating consequences of secrets kept behind closed doors. The emotional tension between the characters makes the mystery even more gripping.
Another reason I loved this book is how accessible it is. The chapters are short, the writing is crisp, and it's nearly impossible to stop reading "just one more chapter." Before you know it, you've flown through half (or all of) the novel.
As someone who reads almost exclusively psychological thrillers, it takes a bit to genuinely surprise me, but The Couple Next Door managed to keep me guessing until the very end. That's one of the reasons Shari Lapena has become one of my favorite thriller authors. She understands exactly how to balance suspense, character development, and shocking twists without sacrificing the story itself.

Final Thoughts
The Couple Next Door is everything I look for in a psychological thriller: gripping suspense, memorable twists, morally complex characters, and a mystery that keeps unfolding until the very last pages. This was the book that made me a lifelong Shari Lapena fan, and I still recommend it whenever someone asks me for a thriller that will keep them reading late into the night.
If you've never read Shari Lapena before, this is the perfect place to start.
