The Better Mother by Jennifer van d Kleut: A Five Star Psychological Thriller That Had Me Questioning Everything

Some books slowly build suspense. Others grab you by the throat from the very beginning and refuse to let you go. The Better Mother by Jennifer van der Kleut is definitely the latter.

I absolutely loved this book! It was fast-paced, suspenseful, completely addictive, and filled with the kind of outrageous behavior that had me questioning what on earth was wrong with these people.

And can we PLEASE talk about Madison?

Because that woman was something else entirely.

A Psychological Thriller That Dopesn't Waste Time

One of my favorite things about The Better Mother is how quickly the story gets moving.

There's no endless buildup or uncessary filler. Jennifer van der Kleut introduces an uncomfortable situation and then proceeds to make it increasingly disturbing.

Every time I thought things couldn't possibly get worse, something else happened.

This is exactly what I want from a psychological thriller: tension, unpredicatability, and the overwhelming desire to keep reading just one more chapter.

An Unexpected Pregnancy and a Very Complicated Sitauation

The story follows Savannah Mitchell, a 34 year old woman trying to rebuild her life after a difficult breakup.

After a brief fling with a man named Max, Savannah discovers she's pregnant.

Complicated? Absolutely. Impossible to navigate? Not necessarily.

Unfortunately, Max has reunited with his former girlfriend, Madison.

And instead of reacting with understandable discomfort or jealousy, Madison seems positively delighted about Savannah's pregnancy.

Now, I'm all for adults behaving maturely in ciomplicated situations.

But there is being supportive, and then there is whatever the hell Madison was doing.

Madison: Girl, What is WRONG With You?

I have encountered some deeply unhinged characters in psychological thrillers, but Madison deserves her own category.

At first, her behavior could almost be mistaken for enthusiasm. She wants to help Savannah. She wants to be involved. She presents herslef as someone with everyone's best interests at heart.

But the more involved she becomes, the more alarming her behavior gets.

The unsolicited advice. The constant interference. The complete disregard for Savannah's bopundaries.

MA'AM. THIS IS NOT YOUR PREGNANCY!!

What made Madison such an effective antagonist was that she didn't need to be overtly threatening every second to make me uncomfortable.

Savannah Deserved Some Peace

I genuinely felt for Savannah.

Imagine discovering you're pregnant, attempting to navigate an already complicated relationship with the baby's father, and then having to deal with his girlfriend behaving as though she's entitled to control your pregnancy.

Absolutely not.

Savannah is trying to make responsible decisions about her future and her child. Instead of receiving the respect and support she deserves, she finds herself dealing with increasingly invasive behavior.

What frustrated me most was thatg Savannah shouldn't have had to fight so hard for sopmething as basic as personal; autonomy.

Her pregnancy. Her body. Her decisions.

Period.

Max, We Need Top Have A Conversation

And then there's Max.

Sir.

SIR.

At what point do we stop making excuses for someone's behavior and acknowledge that something is seriously wrong?

One of the most frustrating aspects of the novel is watching Madison's behavior become increasingly concerning while Max continues to believe she means well.

I understand wanting to see the best in someone you love.

But there's a difference between being supportive of your partner and refusing to recognize obvious warning signs.

Sometimes I wanted to reach into the book and shake some sense into him.

The Fast Pacing Was Everything

I cannot emphasize how muich I appreciated the pacing.

Some psychological thrillers spend so much time establishing their characters that the actual suspense gets lost.

Not this one.

The Better Mother maintains a sense of urgency that makes the reading experience genuinely exciting.

There is always another uncomfortable interaction, another boundary crossed, or another reason to question someone's intention.

I never felt like the story was dragging.

For someone who loves a thriller that moves quickly and keeps the tension high, this was an absolutel treat.

When Helpfulness Becomes Control

One of the most interesting themes in this novel is the difference between genuine concern and manipulation disguised as concern.

Madison repreatedly positions herself as someone who wants to help.

But help isn't really help when it comes with demands, pressure, and the expectation that someone surrender control over their own life.

That distinction is what makes her behavior so disturbing.

She's not simply an overenthusiastic girlfirend who doesn't understand boundaries.

Her behavior raises much darker questions about entitlement, obsession, and control.

And that makes the story far more unsettling that a straightforward tale of romantic jealousy.

The Psychological Manipulation Was Infuriating

I love psychological thriller's that make me emotionally invested in what's happening.

And The Better Mother certainly accomplished that.

The manipulation throughout the story creates an atmosphere where even ordinary interactions feel threatening.

What begins as an awkward co-parenting arrangement becomes something much more sinister.

There's also something particularly disturbing about watching someone repeatedly violate another person's boundaries while insisting that their intentions are innocent.

It's the kind of behavior that makes you want to scream at the characters.

And believe me, I had plenty to say.

A Domestic Thriller With a Truly Disturbing Premise

One reason I enjoy domestic thrillers so much is that they take familiar situation and reveal the darkness hiding beneath them.

Relationships, families, pregnancies, and parenting are all experience assoicated with trust and emotional vulnerability.

The Better Mother takes those expectations and turns them upside down.

The danger doesn't come from a mysterious stranger lurking in the shadows.

It comes from someone who has managed to insert herself into an intensely personal situation.

That makes the story feel particularly invasive and unsettling.

The idea that someone could become so obsessed with another woman's pregnancy is horrifying.

And yet, as a premise for a psychological thriller?

Absiolutely delicious.

A Villain You Love to Hate

Let me be clear: I could not stand Madison.

But I also think that's part of what makes this book so successful.

A memorable antagonist doesn't necessarily have to be likable or sympathetic.

Sometimes a villain's greatest contribution to a story is am,king readers feel genuiione outrage.

Madison accomplised that repeatedly.

Her sense of entitlement was astounding and her behavior made it impossible for me to remain emotionally detached from the story.

I was invested.

I was irritated.

I was concerned for Savannah.

And I absolutely needed to know how everything would unfold.

That's effective thriller writing.

Why This Book Earned Five Stars

For me, a five star thriller doesn't have to be the most complicated or intellectually challenging novel I've ever read.

It needs to keep me engaged.

And ideally, it needs to make me forget everything else because I'm too busy wondering what will happen next.

The Better Mother delivered on all three.

I loved the pacing, the escalating suspense, and the outrageous character dynamics.

Most importantly, I never lost interest.

Jennifer van der Kleut understands hot to create a situation that is simultaneously fascinating and deeply uncomfortable.

This was exactly the kind of thriller I love reading.

Final Thoughts: Five Stars and a Whole Lot of WTF

The Better Mother was an absolute winner for me.

Fast paced? Check.

Suspenseful? Check.

Disturbing characters? Oh, absolutely.

A woman whose behavior made me repeatedly question her sanity and audacity? MADISON I'M LOOKING DIRECTLY AT YOU!

I love a good domestic thriller, especially one featuring obsession, manipulation, and characters who amke spectacularly terrible decisions.

Jennifer van der Kleut delivered a thoroughly entertaining reading experience that kept me hooked from beginning to end.

If you enjoy psychological thrillers filled with tension, complicated relationships, and deeply unsettling behavior, I highly recommend adding THe Better Mother to your reading list.

And Madison?

Girl. Seek help.

Preferably far, far away from Savannah.
