Someone We Know by Shari Lapena Review

Shari Lapena has become one of those authors whose books I immediately pick up without reading the synopsis fist. She has a remarkable ability to turn seemingly ordinary neighborhoods into pressure cookers filled with secrets, lies, and suspicion, and Someone We Know is one of the best examples of that talent. I gave this book 5 stars because I simply could not put it down.

The story begins with a teenage boy secretly hacking into his neighbor’s computers as a harmless thrill-or so he thinks. At first it feels like an interesting but relatively small secret. Then a woman is found murdered, and suddenly every hidden affair, every lie, and every seemingly perfect family on the street becomes a potential suspect.

One of the thingsI love most about Shari Lapena’s writing is how she makes an entire neighborhood feel suspicious. No one is completely innocent. Every chapter peels back another layer, revealing secrets that completely change how you view each character. Just when I thought I had figured out where the story was headed, another revelation sent me in a different direction.

Unlike many thrillers that focus on one unreliable narrator, Someone We Know explores multiple households, creating a fascinating web of interconnected lives. Everyone knows everyone-or at least thy think they do. The result is a story that constantly asks an unsettling questions:

How well do we really know the people living next door?

Lapena excels at building tension from everyday situations. There are. No elaborate conspiracies or unbelievable twists. Instead, the suspense rows from realistic secrets, strained marriages, neighborhood gossip, infidelity, parenting struggles, and the fear that even the nicest people may be hiding something terrible. That realism makes the story feel even more unsettling.

I also appreciated the pacing. The chapters are short, making it incredibly easy to say “one more chapter.” Before I knew it, hours had passed because I needed to know who was telling the truth and who was lying.

What makes this novel especially effective is that they mystery isn’t just about identifying a killer. It’s about uncovering the hidden lives people work so hard to keep behind closed doors. Every family has something t lose, and every new revelation raises the stakes.

As always, Shari Lapena’s writing is clean, fast-paced, and impossible to stop reading. She doesn’t rely on excessive descriptions or filler. Every chapter moves the story forward, and every clue matters.

Someone We Know is anther reminder of why Shari Lapena’s writing remains one of my favorite thriller authors. She has perfected th art of turning ordinary suburban life into something deeply unsettling, proving that the most dangerous secrets are often hidden behind the most ordinary front doors.
