Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six by Lisa Unger-Book Review
When a Dream Vacation Becomes a Nightmare
Lisa Unger has become one of my go-to authors whenever I'm in the mood for psychological suspense, and Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six definitely delivered an entertaining, twist-filled reading experience. While it wasn't my favorite book she's written, it kept me engaged from beginning to end and reminded me why she's such a reliable thriller author.
The story follows three couples who head to an exclusive luxury cabin hidden deep in the woods for what is supposed to be a relaxing getaway. Of course, anyone who reads thrillers knows that "secluded cabin" and "peaceful vacation" rarely belong in the same sentence. As the weekend unfolds, long-buried secrets begin to surface, strange events escalate, and it becomes increasingly clear that someone knows far more about the group than they should.
One of the things I enjoyed the most about this novel was the atmosphere. Unger does an excellent job making the isolated setting feel both beautiful and deeply unsettling (think God of the Woods). The cabin itself almost becomes a character, and the surrounding wilderness creates a constant feeling that there is nowhere to run if something goes wrong. With no internet and barely any cell service. I always appreciate thrillers that use their setting to build tension rather than relying solely on shocking twists.
Another strength of the novel is its layered cast of characters. Each member of the group arrives carrying personal baggage, hidden resentments, or secrets that slowly unravel throughout the story. As the reader, you're constantly questioning everyone's motives and trying to determine who can actually be trusted. That uncertainty keeps the pages turning.
The mystery itself unfolds gradually, weaving together family drama, hidden identities, betrayal, and questions about genetics and the past. I enjoyed how the different storylines eventually intersected, even when I wasn't entirely sure where they were heading.
While I had a great time reading this book, it wasn't a perfect five-star read for me. At times the pacing slowed in the middle, and there were moments where the multiple perspectives made it difficult to connect deeply with every character. Some of the twists felt stronger than others, but overall the payoff was satisfying enough to make the journey worthwhile.
What continues to impress me about Lisa Unger is her ability to blend psychological suspense with emotional complexity. Her stories aren't just about discovering the culprit-they're about exploring how trauma, family history, and hiddens truths shape the people involved.
If you're looking for a thriller filled with secrets, isolated settings, unreliable characters, and steadily escalating suspense, Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six is well worth picking up.

Final Thoughts
While it doesn't quite rank among my favorite Lisa Unger novels, Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six is still an engaging psychological thriller that kept me guessing and entertained. The eerie atmosphere, layered mystery, and steadily building suspense make it an easy recommendation for thriller fans.
