There are certain books that completely immerse you in their setting, and An Unwanted Guest by Shari Lapena is one f them. Out of all of Lapena’s novels, this one remains my absolute favorite. From the very first chapter, I felt like I was trapped inside an old hotel in the mountains of upstate New York while an unforgiving snow and ice storm raged outside.

If you’re a fan of isolated settings, locked-room mysteries, and stories where absolutely no one can be trusted, this book delivers everything you could want.

A Setting That Becomes a Character

One of my favorite things about this novel is its atmosphere. Mitchell’s Inn is exactly he kind of place I’d want to visit-until people start dying.

The hotel is tucked away in the Catskill Mountains, offering guests a peaceful winter getaway. But after a devastating snowstorm knocks out the power and cuts off all communication with the outside world, the cozy retreat quickly transforms into a prison.

The darkness.

The freezing temperatures.

The silence outside.

The uncertainty of not knowing whether help is coming.

It creates an almost claustrophobic feeling that made me want to keep tuning the pages. The setting isn’t just a backdrop-it becomes one of the most important parts of the story.

A Classic Locked-Room with a Modern Feel

As someone who loves classic mysteries, I appreciated how An Unwanted Guest pays homage to the traditional “everyone is trapped together” mystery while still feeling fresh.

With every new death, suspicion shifts from one guest to another.

Everyone has secrets.

Everyone seems capable of murder.

Everyone has a reason to lie.

Just when I thought I had everything figured out, Lapena would introduce another clue that made me question my entire theory.

That’s one of the reasons I love her writing so much. She keeps you constantly second-guessing yourself.

Constant Suspense

The pacing never really slows down.

Because the guests are trapped inside the hotel with no electricity, no phone service, and no way to leave, the tension builds naturally with every chapter. Every strange noise in the hallway feels threatening . Every missing guest becomes suspicious.

I found myself constantly thinking:

“Who is next?”

The feeling of dread sticks with you throughout the novel.

The Perfect Winter Read

I honestly think this is one of the best thrillers to read during the colder months.

The descriptions of blowing snow, icy roads, fireplaces, and the old mountain lodge make it incredibly immersive. It’s the kind of book that almost makes you feel cold while you’re reading it.

There’s something uniquely unsettling about knowing that the killer is trapped inside with everyone else- and that there’s nowhere to run.

If you enjoy atmospheric mysteries, this one absolutely nails that feeling.

Why This Is My Favorite Shari Lapena Novel

I’ve enjoyed many of Shari Lapena’s boos but An Unwanted Guest stands out because everything works together so well.

The isolated setting immediately pulls you in.

The mystery keeps you guessing.

The pacing never drags.

The atmosphere is unforgettable.

Most importantly, I never felt like I could fully trust any character. Every time I became convinced I’d solved the mystery, the story pulled the rug out from under me.

That’s exactly what I meant from a thriller.

An Unwanted Guest is everything I want in a mystery novel: an unforgettable setting, relentless suspense, believable twists, and a mystery that keeps you engaged until the very end.
